'Iron Man' has heavy mettle overseas

Grosses $96.8 million from 7,500 screens

"Iron Man" dominated the international circuit over the weekend, grossing $96.8 million in its opening surge from about 7,500 screens in 57 markets.

Combined with its No. 1 domestic opening tally, the Marvel Entertainment production -- released in all but four overseas territories by Paramount Pictures International -- has accumulated $201 million at the worldwide boxoffice.

The mighty foreign returns averaging nearly $13,000 per screen indicate that this heavy metal hero played by Robert Downey Jr. is destined to become the biggest comic-book-inspired superhero on the large screen since "Spider-Man."

Sony opened "Spider-Man 3" internationally a year ago to an estimated $227 million from 16,700 screens in 105 markets. Record holder for an overseas opening break is 2007's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" from Disney, which garnered $251.5 million in its first six days.

"Iron Man" began its three-phase opening surge via PPI in 27 markets last Wednesday. By Sunday, it finished No. 1 just about everywhere. In the U.K., the take was $10.3 million from 500 screens. Mexico provided $9.6 million from 424 sites. Korea kicked in $7.5 million from 530 situations.

Other "Iron Man" opening tallies: Brazil, $6 million from 330 locations; Italy, $5.6 million from 455 sites; Australia, $5.5 million from 230 screens; Taiwan, $2 million from 60 locations; Singapore, $1.9 million from just 29 spots; Philippines, $1.8 million from 106 situations; and Malaysia, $1.7 million in just 60 spots.

In France, SND distributed "Iron Man," and the opening figure was $7.1 million. Sony released the picture in Spain, which generated $6.2 million from 541 spots; and in Germany, where Concorde is the distributor, the debut figure was $3.6 million from 632 locations. This week, "Iron Man" bows in Egypt, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro.

Finishing second overseas on the weekend "Made of Honor," Sony's romantic comedy with Patrick Dempsey, which premiered day and date with its No. 2 domestic debut. The weekend tally was an estimated $6.5 million from 1,335 screens in 21 territories. Worldwide gross total stands at $12 million.

No. 3 is Warner's "Fool's Gold," another romantic comedy that grabbed an estimated $4.7 million from 1,660 situations in 40 markets for an overseas cume of $32.8 million. Fourth was Sony's "21" about MIT students at the gambling tables, which came up with $4.1 million from 1,555 screens in 34 territories for a cume of $37.7 million.

No. 5 was yet another romantic comedy, "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," from the Judd Apatow stable. As per Universal International the tally was $4 million from 1,000 screens in nine markets with the U.K. leading the way with $2.7 million from 390 locations. Early overseas cume, $16.1 million.

Fox's "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears A Who!" raised its international cume to $132 million thanks to a $3.8 million weekend from 1,776 screens in 32 markets. Fox's cop drama "Street Kings" rounded up $3 million from 2,274 sites in 46 territories for a cume of $25 million.

Despite the controversy over those Vanity Fair magazine pictures of Miley Ray Cyrus, Disney's "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" music docu continues nicely in 3-D situations with an estimated weekend take of $220,000 from 98 screens in 14 territories. Cume is $4.3 million from 137 playdates. Summit/Universal's "Nim's Island" tallied $3.8 million from 1,854 screens in 15 markets.

Other international cumes: Paramount's "The Spiderwick Chronicles," $85 million; Warner's "10,000 BC," $169 million; Disney's "Sommer," $5.5 million from Germany and Austria; Fox's "27 Dresses," $76.5 million; Disney's "Enchanted," $212.2 million; Fox's "Meet The Spartans," $44.8 million; and Disney's "The Game Plan," $53.3 million.
