'Ishq' off to $10 mil start

Pic features Stallone cameo, launches on 2,000 screens

NEW DELHI -- Eros International said Monday that its weekend release “Kambhaqt Ishq” ("Damn Love") grossed about $10 million worldwide with India contributing $6.9 million.

Touted as one of the year's most anticipated releases, “Ishq” features top Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar and actress Kareena Kapoor along with cameos by Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh.

In the U.K., the film was eighth among the top ten releases grossing £300,000 (US$484,080) while in the U.S. it collected US$700,000. In Pakistan, the film collected US$100,000 from only 15 prints, the highest ever for any Bollywood film, according to Eros.

Eros International executive vice president Nandu Ahuja said the film “remained steady throughout the weekend despite heavy rains (especially in Mumbai)...and we are confident of the film’s performance in the weeks to come.”

Trade analyst and journalist Taran Adarsh said that the film's initial run indicates “Ishq” “is amongst the top five openers of all time in India.”

For “Ishq,” Eros rolled out one of the widest releases for a Bollywood film, with 2,000 plus screens worldwide, including India.
