Italian soccer rights still in limbo

Next season gets under way Saturday

VENICE -- With the start of the Italian soccer season less than 48 hours away, the sport's governing body said it is "confident" it will reach an agreement to broadcast the top league's games to Italian fans.

Two deadlines for auctioning off broadcast rights to Serie A games have passed with no bidder in place. As of late Thursday, contracts remained unsigned, with the season set to get under way Saturday.

The Lega Calcio has scheduled a series of meetings before the start of the season in a last-ditch effort to reach an agreement.
