Italy Box Office: 'Cinderella' Sparkles With $5.5M

The classic fairy tale sweeps the country.

Cinderella, or Cenerentola to locals, opened wide in Italy, capturing $5.5 million in its first week. Lily James in the title fairy-tale role captured audiences all the way to the bank.

The live action Disney film format is hugely popular in the country. Angelina Jolie's Maleficent was the number one film of 2014.

The film is well below Fifty Shades of Grey's opening in Italy, which brought in $9.1 million its first week, as well as American Sniper, which opened at $6.7 million.

Cinderella will have to stay strong over the next few weeks to rival Maleficent's $19.1 million box office haul. But it already faces tough competition among the teen crowd with the premiere of Insurgent this week.

Will Smith's con-flick Focus fell from the number one to the number three spot with $1.9 million. And The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, after a strong first two weeks, fell further to the fifth spot, bringing in $822,059.

Suite Francaise starring Michelle Williams and Kristin Scott Thomas brought in $585,156, and Colin Firth's spy film Kingsman: The Secret Service stayed steady at $380,076.

Fifty Shades of Grey fell to the number nine spot with $340,144. And Birdman, still riding high on its Oscar win, pulled in $259,232 at the number ten spot.
