Italy fests look West

ROME -- Italy's two most visible film festivals are looking West this year, with both announcing retrospectives of Western films for their lineups.

The Aug. 29-Sept. 7 Venice International Film Festival will feature a retrospective of Westerns filmed in Italy as part of the festival's ongoing Secret Stories of Italian Films series.

The RomaCinemaFest, scheduled for Oct. 18-27, plans to follow suit with a similar retrospective.

According to local media reports, the retrospective of the so-called Spaghetti Westerns is the "surprise" that Rome festival president Goffredo Bettini announced previously.

The collaboration between the two festivals is part of an ongoing effort to peacefully coexist after a rocky start in which the venerable Venice event clashed at several points in the Rome festival's first year.
