'The Voice of Italy' winner chooses controversial first single

"Like a virgin, touched for the very first time," are lyrics one wouldn't expect to hear from a woman of the faith. But Sister Cristina Scuccia has chosen to cover Madonna's 1984 hit "Like a Virgin" as the debut single from her upcoming album.

Scuccia, like Madonna, chose Venice as the location for the video shoot. But her version includes neither roaming lions nor lace crop tops. It’s a classic black-and-white video that turns the pop song into a romantic ballad.

Explaining the risqué Madonna cover, the 26-year-old Scuccia told Catholic newspaper Avennire, “I chose it with no intention to provoke or scandalize. Reading the text, without being influenced by previous interpretations, you discover that it is a song about the power of love to renew people, to rescue them from their past. And this is the way that I wanted to interpret it.”

Sister Cristina became a viral sensation earlier this year with her win on The Voice of Italy, which airs on RAI. A cover of Alicia Keys' "No One" has over 62 million views on YouTube. Her win includes a recording contract with Universal.

She went on the show originally as an answer to Pope Francis’ call to take to the streets to spread the faith. “He is the best answer to whoever thinks that I shouldn’t sing on television,” she said. "I know I have a big responsibility. I have to give witness, and I am happy to do it. Because I am excited to have met Christ, and I would like everybody else to do the same."

But the young nun sometimes regrets going on the show for the public attention it has brought. “I feel the almost morbid curiosity of the media as a weight on my back,” she told Avennire.

Sister Cristina's album comes out in November. It will include several covers, songs from the Christian music scene, and two original tracks. All money made from the album will be donated to her congregation’s projects.
