Keira Knightley Stuns With Deep Blue Eyes at 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' L.A. Premiere
The actress coordinated her smoky navy blue makeup with a knitted navy Chanel dress.
One of the color wheel's most timeless shades -- navy -- is having a smoky eye moment right now. Along with Lily Collins and Allison Williams, Keira Knightley is the latest doe-eyed beauty to wear a heavy dose of the classic color.
The actress stepped out in knitted navy Chanel at the Chinese Theater for the premiere of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. (Knightley plays the beloved Tom Clancy character Cathy Muller.) Knightley's longtime makeup artist, Kate Lee, took cues from the dress, which looked like it was straight from Coco's days in 1920s Deauville, to give her client an "of the moment" look. "Keira's dress was quite formal, and I wanted to make her more mysterious," Lee tells Pret-a-Reporter.
To create the look, she lined the inner and outer lash lines with Chanel Le Crayon Khol Intense Eye Pencil in Marine, a soft navy pencil, and blended the lines to give the smudged effect. She topped that with Chanel Limited Edition Illusion D'Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Apparition, a shimmering navy shade, and coats of the brand's Inimitable Mascara in Noir. Nude, natural-looking blush and lips allowed the eyes to remain the focal point.
Lee adds, "Navy is a nice alternative to black, brown and gray. It's flattering to the eye color and just a little bit more interesting, especially when it's a cream shadow." The Chanel celebrity makeup artist, who also counts Anne Hathaway and Rooney Mara as regular clients (and recently graced the cover of The Hollywood Reporter's Beauty Issue with Hathaway), says those interested in copying this look should start with the smoky eye first. "Then clean the skin and do the base and concealer after. You need concealer under the eye, as blue shades in the wrong place can be very unflattering."
And when done in the right place -- a la Knightley -- the effect is smoldering.
