Jackson film changes date

Sony's 'This Is It' release moved up to Oct. 28

Sony Pictures and Sony Music are releasing "Michael Jackson: This Is It" for a limited two-week run, and pushing up the film's opening two days to Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Sony will put the tickets on sale Sept. 27.

The move seems to take a page out of Disney's playbook for its release strategy for "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds" concert movie, whose limited engagement in February 2008 is credited for a boffo opening weekend and for driving up the boxoffice.

Another factor could be Halloween, which falls on Saturday. The Halloween weekend is not considered by industry insiders as a potent weekend.

The studio and producers have also closed a deal with Kenny Ortega to direct the movie. Ortega is the helmer behind the "High School Musical" movies and was Jackson's creative partner on the "This is It" concert that was to have taken place. Ortega also worked with Jackson on the singer's "Dangerous" and "History" tours.
