Jada Pinkett Smith Confirms 'Magic Mike XXL' Role
"There was a character written for a male that they wanted to turn into a female"
Matthew McConaughey may be out of Magic Mike XXL, but Jada Pinkett Smith is in.
The Gotham actress confirmed her role in the Magic Mike sequel — starring Channing Tatum and directed by Gregory Jacobs — on Monday morning while on The Queen Latifah Show.
"Yes, you know, Channing and Gregory and Warner Bros. really took a chance," she told Queen Latifah. "There was a character written for a male that they wanted to turn into a female." Will she be dancing? No, she said, "not one of those [characters]! I can't really reveal it yet, but I'm excited about it."
Pinkett Smith joins new cast addition Amber Heard, alongside Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Alex Pettyfer and Gabriel Iglesias of the first film. The sequel, which began production several weeks ago and was co-written by Tatum and Reid Carolin, checks back in with the group of male strippers. The first film's director, Steven Soderbergh, is returning as editor and cinematographer (though under his pseudonyms Mary Ann Bernard and Peter Andrews, respectively).
The actress noted she's completely comfortable with all the men on set. "I'm used to being around beefcake like that because you know who I live with!" she joked, in reference to Will Smith. "I'm used to that kind of beefcake-ness in my environment. I can handle it!"
Magic Mike XXL will dance into theaters July 1, 2015. Watch her announcement below.
