Jaden Smith to Star in Skateboarding Movie From Crystal Moselle
The project will be the narrative feature debut for the 'Wolfpack' director.
The Wolfpack director Crystal Moselle will be making her narrative feature debut with a movie about the female skateboarding scene in New York City.
Jaden Smith and Orange Is the New Black's Elizabeth Rodriguez will lead a cast of real-life female skateboarders that includes Rachelle Vinberg, Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell, Kabrina Adams and Jules Lorenzo. Moselle met the girls, known as the collective Skate Kitchen, while doing a recent documentary short.
The as-yet untitled project will follow Camille, a lonely suburban teenager whose life changes dramatically when she befriends a group of girl skateboarders. As she journeys into the raw New York City subculture, Camille begins to make choices that lead to a deeper understanding of herself. Moselle wrote the script, along with Aslihan Unaldi and Jennifer Silverman.
Lizzie Nastro and Izabella Tzenkova of Pulse Films are producing with Julia Nottingham, RT Features’ Rodrigo Teixeira and Bow and Arrow’s Michael Sherman and Matthew Perniciaro. Lourenço Sant’Anna, Sophie Mas and Thomas Benski are executive producers.
The film recently wrapped principal photography, shooting on location in New York. UTA Independent Film Group will be handling worldwide rights.
Moselle’s first feature-length directorial project The Wolfpack had its premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and was awarded the U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize. She is repped by UTA, Untitled Entertainment and Gray Krauss.
