James Murdoch to join pharma giant

To be nonexecutive chairman of GlaxoSmithKline

LONDON -- James Murdoch, CEO of News Corp. Europe and chairman of satcaster BSkyB has been appointed nonexecutive chairman of pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, the British company that is thought to be planning to cut 6,000 jobs, about a third of its global work force.

Murdoch will take up the new post at the company's annual general meeting May 20.
