Jared Leto will star in The Outsider, an action thriller to be produced by Waypoint Entertainment and Linson Entertainment. Matrin Zandvliet is directing.

Waypoint is the producer and financier of movies such as Shane Black’s upcoming thriller The Nice Guys. Linson Entertainment, run by producer Art Linson, has worked on films such as Heat and Fight Club.

Andrew Baldwin (Bastille Day) wrote the script, which is set in post-World War II Japan and tells the story of an imprisoned American soldier (Leto) who is released with the help of his Yakuza cellmate. Now free, he sets out to earn their respect and repay his debt while navigating the dangerous criminal underworld.

The pic is eyeing a fall shoot. Bloom will handle international sales. Waypoint's Ken Kao will produce alongside John Linson and Art Linson.

The Outsider will mark Zandvliet’s English-language debut following the success of Land of Mine, the war drama about German soldiers forced to dig up landmines with their bare hands. The movie premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival and was acquired by Sony Pictures.

For Leto, meanwhile, The Outsider marks a rare outing for the actor, know for his selectivity. The project is only the second one he has chosen to do since winning an Oscar for 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club. (The first is the upcoming Suicide Squad, in which he plays the classic Batman bad guy the Joker.)

Waypoint is prepping The Nice Guys, starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, for a May 20 release via Warner Bros. It is also at work on Hostiles, a new movie from director Scott Cooper that will star Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike.
