Jason Derulo Joins Jennifer Hudson, James Corden in All-Star 'Cats' Movie (Exclusive)
This meow mix already includes Idris Elba and Taylor Swift, among others.
Multi-platinum singer-songwriter Jason Derulo will make his feature acting debut with Cats, Working Title and Universal’s big-screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
The story tells of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as "the Jellicle choice" and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.
Hooper and Lee Hall (Billy Elliott, War Horse) have adapted the story, initially based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, for the screen.
Derulo will play a feline named Rum Tum Tugger, who is rebellious and never satisfied.
Among the other roles, Hudson is playing Grizabella, Elba will play Macavity and McKellan has been cast as Gus the Theatre Cat.
Production is due to begin next month.
Hooper and Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing, as well as Debra Hayward, who worked with Working Title on the adaptation of Les Miserables and was instrumental in bringing Cats to the banner.
Steven Spielberg, Lloyd Webber and Angela Morrison are executive producing.
Derulo is behind such hits as "Whatcha Say" and "Talk Dirty," which went quadruple-platinum, and "Want to Want Me" and "Ridin Solo," which went triple-platinum. His song "Colors" was the 2018 FIFA World Cup anthem and was streamed over 115 million times, while his latest hit, "Goodbye," a collaboration with David Guetta that features Nicki Minaj and Willy William, has over 60 million streams on Spotify.
Derulo is repped by CAA and 23 Management.
