Alex Wolff and Chris Cooper star in the coming-of-age tale.

Coming Through the Rye will be distributed in partnership with Samuel Goldwyn Films and Eammon Films, the companies said Thursday.

The coming-of-age tale is set in 1969 and follows Jamie (Alex Wolff), an outcast 16-year-old who identifies with Catcher in the Rye protagonist Holden Caulfield, so he decides to seek the approval of J.D. Salinger (Chris Cooper) to adapt the novel into a play.

Stefania Owen also stars in the film, which is based on director James Sadwith's own journey as a high schooler to meet the reclusive author.

"The Catcher in the Rye holds a special place in my heart, so when I saw Jim's true story unfold in Coming Through the Rye, it struck a chord with me. We are delighted to be working on the film's release with Eammon Films," said Melanie Miller, executive vp at Samuel Goldwyn.

Sadwith produced the film along with Stan Erdreich and Teddy Grennan. Jeff Steen and Alexandra Woodward acted as executive producers.

Eammon, who negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers, will handle the theatrical release, which will begin on Oct. 14. Samuel Goldwyn will distribute the film across all ancillaries.
