Jennifer Aniston Opens Up About Being "Shamed" for Brad Pitt Divorce
"I just thought: I have worked too hard in this life and this career to be whittled down to a sad, childless human."
Being Jennifer Aniston is a blessing and a curse.
That's how her fame is described in a new interview for Marie Claire's December 2016 issue, by the Office Christmas Party star's best friend, Kristin Hahn.
While speaking with the magazine, Aniston opens up about why she decided to finally call out decades of tabloid treatment in an op-ed for The Huffington Post this summer.
"My marital status has been shamed," she said in reference to her 2005 divorce from Brad Pitt and relationship with Justin Theroux, whom she married in August 2015. "My divorce status was shamed; my lack of a mate had been shamed; my nipples have been shamed. It's like, Why are we only looking at women through this particular lens of picking us apart? Why are we listening to it? I just thought: I have worked too hard in this life and this career to be whittled down to a sad, childless human."
In the op-ed, Aniston addressed the constant rumor mill over whether she is pregnant. "For the record, I am not pregnant," she wrote. "What I am is fed up. I’m fed up with the sport-like scrutiny and body shaming that occurs daily under the guise of 'journalism,' the 'First Amendment' and 'celebrity news.'"
In the excerpts released by Marie Claire, the Friends star also explains why Theroux is the right person for her.
"All I know is that I feel completely seen, and adored, in no matter what state," she says. "There's no part of me that I don't feel comfortable showing, exposing. And it brings forth the best part of myself, because I care about him so much. And he's such a good person. It hurts me to think of anything hurting him."
The full interview hits newsstands Nov. 15.
