In an appearance on "The Talk," the singer recalls being asked to marry her fiance, and asking him the same -- complete with a ring -- on his birthday.

Jennifer Hudson looks slimmer than ever taping an upcoming episode of The Talk. She's lost a total of 80 lbs. on Weight Watchers and has said she's more proud of that achievement than of winning an Oscar.

On the show, she talks seriously about the night she didn't go to spend the night with her mom, as she normally would have. That turned out to be the night her mother and brother were fatally shot. Her nephew was later found dead. "Just that one decision saved my life," the Oscar-winning actress/singer marvels.

On a happier note, she also dishes about her “two” marriage proposals with fiance David Otunga and her upcoming wedding and that all important wedding gown. “It’s Like Its Own Show!” on an episode of The Talk to air Monday (Jan. 16)

Seems that Otunga proposed to her and she, well, she returned the favor.

“He proposed to me on my birthday and he would complain to me that he didn’t have an engagement ring. He would say, 'You have a ring. How are they gonna know I'm taken?' So I had  a ring made for hm and then gave it to him as a birthday gift on his birthday. And the way I gave it to him, I was like so ‘Now will you marry me?’ So I kinda proposed to him too!”

On her upcoming wedding planning and that VID:
“It can get really tedious…I’m coming up with all the creative ideas. David is a more sentimental than I am, so he throws his two cents in too. My dress for instance, it’s like its own show…It has its own production, it really does!”
