Jill Scott Under Fire for Supporting Bill Cosby
The singer-songwriter takes aim at Cosby critics on Twitter
Singer-songwriter Jill Scott is under fire for repeatedly tweeting her support of Bill Cosby amid a wave of sexual assault allegations against the comedian.
The messages started Nov. 24 on social media, after a Twitter follower asked Scott to sign and share a petition calling on Temple University to sever its relationship with Cosby. (Cosby resigned from the school's board of trustees a week later.)
Scott and Cosby are both Philadelphia natives, and both hold degrees from Temple. Scott received an honorary doctorate in May, which Cosby awarded to her, according to the university.
More than a dozen women have stepped forward in the past month to claim Cosby sexually assaulted them. Cosby has not addressed the allegations, though he has canceled several tour dates in the face of mounting public criticism.
After receiving the Temple petition on Twitter, Scott shot back.
@ShelbyKnox oh ok. So they've proven the alleged allegations? I didn't know. Will they also be giving him back the millions he's donated?— ⭐Jill Scott⭐ (@missjillscott) November 24, 2014
Her comment drew negative reactions in the socialsphere.
Scott said "media/society" is targeting Cosby's legacy.
@JasBaileyTweets sides with Mr. Cosby? No. I side with substantiated proof when media/society is attempting to destroy a magnificent Legacy— ⭐Jill Scott⭐ (@missjillscott) December 1, 2014
Scott maintained she was respecting a man whose work impacted American culture.
@KristensWay I'm respecting a man who has done more for the image of Brown people that almost anyone EVER. From Fat Albert to the Huxtables— ⭐Jill Scott⭐ (@missjillscott) December 1, 2014
She gave advice for victims of sexual assault.
Rape is a despicable, cowardly crime. If you've been raped- plz do NOT shower, go to police IMMEDIATELY, have a rap kit done. GET EVIDENCE.— ⭐Jill Scott⭐ (@missjillscott) December 1, 2014
