The news is true, devastating and unavoidable: One Direction is taking an extended break to focus on their solo careers.

And on Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday night, Kimmel pointed out that the headline offered newscasters "a chance to shine" before noting that they've all commented on the news with the same joke.

He then cut to a montage of anchors predictably announcing that One Direction is moving in, yes, "different directions."

But while news desks worldwide apparently find the band's breakup irresistibly pun-worthy, the Twittersphere is taking it very seriously, with thousands of young fans apparently left in ruins (#1dsplit), not a dry emoticon eye in sight.

Therefore, Kimmel reached out via text to his 13-year-old niece, Alison, who also appears to be in a deep state of mourning. Uncle Jimmy offered his condolences and a pep talk with a hefty dose of his own emoticons.
