RLJE Films has picked up the North American rights to The Opening Act, starring Silicon Valley's Jimmy O. Yang, from writer-director Steve Byrne. The indie from Wild West Picture Show Productions is set to be released in theaters and on demand Oct. 16.

The Opening Act follows aspiring stand-up comedian Will Chu (Yang), who nabs an emcee slot on the road opening for his hero Billy G. Soon the realities of life on the stage come crashing in, leaving Chu to prove he has what it takes to make his dream a reality.

“Steve Byrne has created an entertaining and insightful film that showcases the challenges and rewards of pursuing a career in comedy, while also inviting some of the funniest people in the business to take part in his passion project,” Mark Ward, chief acquisitions officer at RLJE Films, said in a statement.

The Opening Act was produced by Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley and also stars Alex Moffat, Cedric the Entertainer, Neal Brennan, Debby Ryan, Ken Jeong, Bill Burr, Jermaine Fowler and Russell Peters.

Ward and Jess De Leo from RLJE Films negotiated the deal with Endeavor Content, who co-financed and represented the film on behalf of the filmmakers.
