'Jodhaa Akbar' bows with US$9.8 million worldwide


NEW DELHI -- Mumbai-based UTV Motion Pictures’ romantic epic “Jodhaa Akbar” grossed US$9.8 million (385 million rupees) worldwide from 1,100 screens in 26 countries in its opening weekend after a Feb. 15 bow.

With 129 prints released in the U.S. – a record for any Indian film - “Jodhaa Akbar” also had the second-highest U.S. opening for an Indian film at $1.6 million. The U.K. contributed $713,000.

“Jodhaa Akbar” revolves around 16th century Mughal emperor Akbar (Hrithik Roshan) and his Hindu wife Jodhaa (Aishwarya Rai), and is directed by Ashutosh Gowariker (who directed 2001 best foreign film Oscar nominee “Lagaan”).

In India, the film opened on 500 physical and 400 digital screens, and collected $6.4 million, which UTV claimed is among the top five all-time weekend openings for a Hindi
