'Jodhaa Akbar' sweeps India Star Awards

Epic wins best film and actor, shares directing award

NEW DELHI -- India's 15th annual Star Screen Awards saw Ashutosh Gowariker's historical epic "Jodhaa Akbar" take home the prizes for best film, director and lead actor, for star Hrithik Roshan.

Gowariker shared the directing award with Neeraj Pandey, who won for the terrorism thriller "A Wednesday."

Presented on Wednesday by News Corp.'s Star India and Indian film weekly Screen, the awards will be telecast this weekend on the Hindi Star Plus channel.

A.R. Rahman, who won a Golden Globe on Sunday for the "Slumdog Millionaire" score, won best music for the romantic hit "Jaane Tu ... Ya Jaane Na" (Maybe You Know, Maybe You Don't) and best background music for "Jodhaa Akbar."

Priyanka Chopra took home the best actress prize for her portrayal of a supermodel in "Fashion," while director-turned-actor Farhan Akhtar got the nod for best male newcomer for his turn as an aspiring musician in "Rock On!!" Other "Rock On!!" wins saw Arjun Rampal take best supporting actor and Shahana Goswami named best actress.

Asin Thottumkal won best female newcomer for her role as a murder victim in the hit "Ghajini."
