John Legend, Linda Perry Team Up for New Pro-Voting Song
Together, the musicians penned "Get Up and Vote," which is being used as part of a social media campaign to increase voter turnout in the midterm elections.
Linda Perry and John Legend are doing their best to get people to the polls next month.
The musicians have teamed up for a new pro-voting song called "Get Up and Vote." Together, Perry and Legend penned the song as a launching pad for a social media campaign to increase voter turnout in November's midterm elections.
The duo posted solo performances of the song on their respective Twitter accounts and encouraged their followers and fellow artists to post their own. "Hey hey, come together/ We can make the world much better," they sing in the videos. "Can’t give up on hope/ Gotta get up and vote, gotta get up and vote."
Several famous faces have already posted videos of themselves singing the tune. Legend has retweeted efforts from pop stars Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson. "Doesn't matter what you wear just as long as you are there. 11/6/18," Perry also wrote on Twitter. "#GetUpAndVOTE!"
More stars — including Jessica Simpson, Alicia Keys, Angel Haze, Sara Gilbert, Cameron Crowe and Natasha Bedingfield — are also expected to participate in the campaign. The campaign will feature a new song dropping every Tuesday until Election Day on Nov. 6.
In a statement, Perry revealed how her collaboration with Legend and the campaign came to be.
"I believe in taking control of your future," said the singer-songwriter. "Over 90 million people felt their voice didn’t matter and wouldn’t be heard. So I thought it was important to let people know that their voice DOES matter and will be heard, no matter what their choice. John Legend and I wanted to write a little song for people to do their own version and post themselves. We wrote this while I was on a plane to N.Y. and John was home in L.A."
