John Legend Serenades Super Bowl Audiences With "America the Beautiful"

The Oscar-nominated musician kicked off the big game with the patriotic tune.

John Legend performed "America the Beautiful" at Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday afternoon.

The Oscar-nominated musician took his place at the piano on the University of Phoenix Stadium field in Glendale, Ariz., prior to Idina Menzel singing the national anthem. As the singer played the piano and sang, footage of the opposing teams, the Grand Canyon, Boston and Seattle displayed across television screens.

Legend, along with rapper Common, is an Oscar nominee for best original song for "Glory" from the film Selma.

Super Bowl XLIX will see the New England Patriots go against the Seattle Seahawks. Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz are slotted to perform during the halftime show.

The game airs live at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 on NBC.
