John Nogawski to head CBS TV Distribution

John Nogawski has taken the reins of CBS Television Distribution.

Nogawski, who most recently shared the division's president and COO titles with Robert Madden, will fill the role held by Roger King, the syndication pioneer who died Dec. 8.

Madden, meanwhile, is taking on the newly created role of senior executive vp. His responsibilities will include overseeing the company's programming partnerships with Sony Pictures Television for "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" and with Harpo Prods. for "The Oprah Winfrey Show." He now will report to Nogawski.

Terry Wood, who has been president of creative affairs and development and signed a new deal as recently as the fall, will remain in her capacity at the division, as will president of sales Joe DiSalvo. Both execs will continue reporting to Nogawski.

In his new role as president, Nogawski will oversee creative, business and administrative operations for CBS Corp.'s domestic syndication company. The executive, who had reported to division CEO King, now will report to CBS Corp. president and CEO Leslie Moonves.

"John has a resume of success across all areas of syndication -- first-run and off-network programming as well as both station and media sales," Moonves said. "He has been instrumental in nurturing a path to syndication for our owned programming and coming up with new, innovative revenue-generating opportunities through our program library, integrated marketing efforts and in the digital space."

Nogawski and Madden took their president/COO posts in September 2006, when King World Prods. was combined with CBS Paramount Domestic TV to form CTD. The new domestic TV structure found Nogawski running all syndication sales and advertiser sales as well as marketing, research and new media, while Madden was given oversight of operations for administration, finance, legal, communications and CBS Consumer Products.

In his new role, Nogawski will oversee a slate that includes eight of the top 10-rated syndicated shows. Among the shows CTD distributes are the first-run "Wheel," "Jeopardy!" "Oprah," "Entertainment Tonight," "Judge Judy" and "Dr. Phil" as well as off-net series including "Everybody Loves Raymond" and the "CSI" franchise. The division is launching another daytime talker, "The Doctors," in the fall.

Nogawski said that nonlinear initiatives also will be a big priority going forward.

"Other platforms are so important to the future," he said. "I want to spend a fair amount of time really getting to know that area and meet with the leaders of (that part of) the industry and partner with the right people to guarantee a successful future."

At CTD, Nogawski is credited with creating revenue-generating platforms connected to the company's programming. He also established an integrated marketing unit that connected advertising brands to first-run productions; forged digital initiatives for first-run and off-network shows that led to partnerships with Yahoo, MSN and Procter & Gamble; and introduced the division into online programming by distributing the Web-based talent contest "Big Shot Live," partnering with "ET" affiliate Web sites nationwide.

Before the 2006 reorganization that formed CTD, Nogawski, a longtime CBS/Paramount executive, was president of CBS Paramount Domestic Television. In that capacity, where he had served since March 2002, he oversaw all distribution activities as well as Paramount Advertiser Services.

Meanwhile, Moonves called Madden "one of the most highly regarded executives in the business with tremendous relationships across our industry." Madden was a longtime King World executive before playing a key role in the company's merger with CBS as executive vp in January 2000. After the merger, he took a similar post at CBS Enterprises before being promoted to COO in January 2004.
