'Black Mass,' 'Sicario' Among Zurich Film Festival's Gala Screenings

Anton Corbijn's 'Life,' Florian Gallenberger's 'Colonia' and Ken Kwapis' 'Walk in the Woods' will also get the festival's red carpet treatment.

Scott Cooper's Black Mass, the biopic of Boston gangster Whitey Bulger starring Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch, will be heading to Zurich after its premiere at the Venice and Toronto film festivals.

The Zurich Festival, for its 11th outing, has picked Black Mass as one of its gala screenings. Other titles confirmed for the red carpet galas include Denis Villeneuve's U.S/Mexican drug drama Sicario, which stars Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro and premiered in Cannes this year, and Colonia, the South American-set drama from German director Florian Gallenberger, which features Emma Watson and Daniel Bruhl and will have its world premiere in Toronto next month.

Also on the gala program in Zurich this year are two magazine feature adaptations. In The End of the Tour, James Ponsoldt looks at a five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky and writer David Foster Wallace, with Jesse Eisenberg playing Lipsky and Jason Segel as the acclaimed novelist. In Anton Corbijn's Life, Robert Pattinson plays Dennis Stock, a photographer for Life magazine, assigned to shoot then up-and-coming actor James Dean (played by Dane DeHaan).

A Walk in the Woods, Ken Kwapis' adaptation of the Bill Bryson's non-fiction best-seller, starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte, which premiered in Sundance, will also make the trip to Zurich.

Previously confirmed Zurich gala titles include Stephen Frears' Lance Armstrong biopic The Program; Catherine Hardwicke's drama Miss You Already; Noah Baumbach's tragicomedy Mistress America; the French drama Mon Roi from Maiwenn; Ben Wheatley's disturbing J.G. Ballard adaptation High-Rise; and Kill Your Friends, a comedy-thriller from director Owen Harris, set in the U.K. industry during the 1990s Britpop craze.

The 11th annual Zurich International Film Festival runs Sept. 24-Oct.4.
