'Jon & Kate' plus a lot

Record viewers tune in TLC's bickering couple

The Season 5 premiere of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" was seen by a record 9.8 million viewers, twice as many as the show's previous series high.

The premiere episode Monday night marked TLC's highest ratings to date among adults 18-49 (6.3) and women 18-34 (9.1).

The reality show has been keeping tabloids busy with husband Jon Gosselin's alleged affair with a 23-year-old teacher.

"Jon & Kate" also was higher-rated than any show on broadcast Monday night, which was highlighted by the second week of ABC's "The Bachelorette" plummeting 30% in the adult demo to place a close second behind repeat-driven CBS.

The fall for "Bachelorette" (6 million viewers, 2.1 rating in adults 18-49) was expected: The show's second episode dropped by nearly the same amount to nearly the same rating last year. And "Bachelorette" continues to outperform last summer's edition.

"Bachelorette" was followed by the Season 2 debut of "Here Come the Newlyweds" (5 million, 1.9). Last year, "Newlyweds" aired in-season, where it premiered stronger. A more fair comparison is the summer debut of "The Mole" in the same slot, which "Newlyweds" outperformed by 12%.

Repeats ruled the rest of the evening except on NBC, which ran a special "Dateline" (7.4 million, 1.6) and "Medium" (7.7 million, 2.1). The canceled drama, which CBS has rescued for next season, grew from its lead-in and won its time period. (partialdiff)
