Hint: It involves a mascara wand.

Mad Men's Jon Hamm landed his long-overdue outstanding lead actor in a drama series win Sunday night for his role as Don Draper in AMC's Mad Men, and looked pretty sharp while he did it.

Groomer-to-the-stars Diana Schmidtke has worked with Hamm since promotions for the first season of Mad Men, and primped him for his winning moment.

"Classic and timeless" is how Schmidtke describes Hamm's clean-cut look and slicked back hair.

So what are her biggest tips for getting her guys ready for an award show?

"Less is more," she says. "Concentrate on delivering an excellent skin care application so that no makeup is needed." Secondly, "Anti-shine is a must instead of powder." And finally, "Take a look at their suit before you start, as that will always give you the inspiration and connection between the clothes and hair for a perfect overall look."

The secret weapon in her grooming arsenal, says Schmidtke, is a mascara wand.

"This particular tool is perfect for spraying a little hairspray on to the tool to groom eyebrows into place all night, along with using it to tame into place any flyaway hairs that may reveal themselves. It’s also a great tool for taming a stubborn beard hair into place, as well as using it not so much for an award show day."

And in the event a male client needs to cover up any gray hair for his on-screen character, Schmidtke's trusty wand also comes in handy once again. "You can use this same tool with a little color application and target the random grey hairs versus coloring the entire head of hair for just a few random grays. It’s an all-around great tool to have on hand."

Hamm, who recently split from his partner of 18 years, Jennifer Westfeldt, did not walk the red carpet this evening.
