Jose Carreras Gala raises $9.4 mil

MUNICH -- Despite a dip in viewership from last year's numbers, the 13th annual Jose Carreras Gala to benefit leukemia patients raised a record 6.5 million euros ($9.4 million) during its three-hour broadcast from Leipzig's Neue Messe on Thursday night.

More than 200 musicians, singers and dancers shared the stage with the Spanish opera star, who conquered the debilitating blood disease 20 years ago and has since raised more than 74.5 million euros ($107.9 million) for the cause.

The gala, shown on regional pubcaster WDR, was seen by 4.3 million viewers, just barely behind the German detective series "File Code XY -- Unsolved" on national pubcaster ZDF and "CSI" on commercial channel RTL.

About 200,000 fewer Germans tuned in to the gala this year, but those who did gave all the more generously.
