“Being a self-diagnosed control freak, I was moved by the character’s struggle to let go of the reins,” says the actress of the coming-of-age comedy.

Judy Greer has signed on to star in Public Schooled, a coming-of-age comedy from Canadian-based filmmakers Kyle Rideout and Josh Epstein.

Epstein and Rideout co-wrote the script, and Rideout will sit in the director's chair when cameras roll in Vancouver starting in November. Epstein is producing.

Public Schooled will star Greer as the mother of a socially awkward boy who has been home-schooled his whole life. When the boy falls in love with a popular one-legged girl, he abandons his mother's suffocating love and enrolls in public school, entering a world of sex, drugs and social studies.

A North American search for the actor to play the boy is currently underway.

“Being a self-diagnosed control freak, I was moved by the character’s struggle to let go of the reins,” Greer said Wednesday in a statement. “I love the idea that no matter how much we try to shelter our kids, at some point they need to be free to discover themselves by themselves.”

The Canadian Film Centre is executive producing and co-financing the feature. Telefilm Canada also is a financier. Justine Whyte (Rhymes for Young Ghouls) will exec produce, while Adam Folk (Cold in July) will co-produce.

Rideout and Epstein’s first feature, Eadweard, was a film-festival favorite, winning awards at fests in Cape Cod, Maui, Nashville and Rhode Island, as well as nabbing a Canadian Screen Award nomination for best adapted screenplay. The movie will be released in the U.S. by Gravitas Ventures.

Greer recently wrapped Wilson, Fox Searchlight’s adaptation of the Daniel Clowes graphic novel that also stars Woody Harrelson, and also will be seen in next summer’s War for the Planet of the Apes. She also is in postproduction on her directorial debut, A Happening of Monumental Proportions, starring Allison Janney, Common and Rob Riggle.

Greer is repped by CAA, Principato-Young and Felker Toczek.
