Julianne Moore Joins Amy Adams in Universal's 'Dear Evan Hansen'

Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever and Amandla Stenberg are already on the roll call.

Julianne Moore is joining Amy Adams to be the maternal figureheads in Dear Evan Hansen, Universal’s adaptation of the Broadway musical.

The movie is warming up its voice as it is in the throes of casting. Adams and Danny Pino joined the roll call last week. Already on board are Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Colton Ryan and Nik Dodani.

Stephen Chbosky (Wonder) is directing the feature which has a script by Steven Levenson, who wrote the book for the stage musical. Music and lyrics are by Academy Award-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who also worked on La La Land and The Greatest Showman.

Platt, who originated the role and even won a Tony for it, is reprising the character of Evan Hansen, a socially awkward teen who gets caught up in a lie when he says he was best friends with a schoolmate who commits suicide. The act initially brings him closer to a crush and brings him attention but he must face repercussions when the truth surfaces.

Moore will play Platt’s mother, Heidi Hansen. In the stage version, the character kicks off the musical with a duet with the dead teen’s mother with the song Anybody Have a Map?  Adams is playing the other mom.

Elsewhere on the call sheet, Dever is playing Zoe, the crush, while Amandla Stenberg has nabbed a part that expands upon the original stage role. Colton Ryan will play Connor, the teen who dies.

Marc Platt, who produced La La Land, and Adam Siegel will produce for their Universal-based Marc Platt Productions.Universal’s senior vp of production Sara Scott and director of development Lexi Barta are oversee production on behalf of the studio.

Moore, who won an Oscar for her work in the 2014 drama Still Alice, recently wrapped Joe Wright’s The Woman in the Window, a crime drama that already sees her working with Adams. The actress in recent years has appeared in movies such as Suburbicon and Kingsman: The Golden Circle and next stars in the upcoming Gloria Steinem biopic, The Glorias.  She is also toplining Apple TV’s adaptation of Stephen King novel, Lisey’s Story.
