Julio Medem to receive Malaga Hoy Prize

World preem of his erotic drama 'Room in Rome' at fest

MADRID -- Julio Medem will receive the Malaga Hoy Prize and see his erotic drama "Room in Rome," debut worldwide as the closing film at the 13th Malaga Spanish Film Festival in April, organizers announced Thursday.

The Malaga Hoy Prize includes a corresponding retrospective of Medem's past works, including "Sex and Lucia" and "Lovers of the Arctic Circle."

"Room" stars Elena Anaya and Natasha Yarovenko and is produced by Medem's Alicia Produces and Morena Films, which saw its prison drama "Cell 211" win the best film award at Sunday's Goya Awards ceremony. IFC Films will handle theatrical release in the U.S. later this year.

The film tells of two women who find themselves in a hotel room together and discover new parts of their identities before reality crashes in and they are each returned to their respective lives.

Malaga runs April 17-24 in Spain's southern resort town.
