'Jumper' is highest again o'seas

Fox pic No. 1 for third week after $12.8 mil frame

A relatively sluggish weekend on the international circuit — still better by a whisker than the comparable frame in 2007 — saw Oscar winners kick up their heels and "Jumper" emerge as No. 1 title for the third consecutive session with an estimated $12.8 million grossed from about 4,000 screens in 44 markets.

The 20th Century Fox International release, about a young man (Hayden Christensen) who can teleport, had a solid opening in Italy (an estimated $2 million from 353 screens) plus first-place rankings in the holdover markets of New Zealand and Thailand. Its overseas gross is $81.9 million; worldwide, it is $148.7 million.

Sony's "Vantage Point," the weekend's No. 2 title overseas and domestically, claimed an offshore estimate of $11.5 million from 2,480 screens in 26 markets for an international gross over two frames of $14 million. Globally, the political thriller's cume is $55 million.

Most of "Vantage's" action came from three of nine new markets: Korea, where the film about various views of an attempted presidential assassination grossed $3 million from 209 screens; Spain, where the No. 1 market tally was $2.3 million from 369 locations; and Germany, $2 million from 446 sites. "Vantage" bows this weekend in five new territories, notably the U.K. and Japan.

Multiple Oscar winner "No Country for Old Men" had its biggest weekend yet on the foreign circuit, finishing third overall with an estimated $8.6 million from 1,913 spots in 44 markets. Its overseas gross stands at $49.5 million.

The Coen brothers' crime drama exploited its Oscar winnings by opening in nine territories, including Germany, where the debut tally was an estimated $1.2 million from 129 spots. In its Italy holdover engagement, the Paramount Pictures International release made off with the No. 1 market spot and $2.1 million from 289 screens, an increase of 18% from the previous weekend.

At No. 4 was Fox's "Meet the Spartans," a New Regency comedy-satire starring Carmen Electra, which opened in seven territories and grossed an estimated $7.3 million from 1,517 screens in 22 markets for a cume of $12.3 million.

Finishing fifth for the weekend was "There Will Be Blood," fueled by two Oscar wins, including a best actor nod for Daniel Day-Lewis. The Paul Thomas Anderson drama unearthed an estimated $5.1 million from 1,061 screens in 33 territories, lifting is four-weekend overseas cume to $17.4 million.

"Blood's" top market for the frame was France, where the Paramount Vantage/Miramax co-production, released internationally by Disney, opened to an estimated $1.4 million from just 130 sites for a lusty per-screen average of $10,769. Another solid market opening was Holland, where the weekend's per-screen average was $10,133 from 15 sites.

Also prominent among Oscar-related titles overseas was Fox's "Juno," which won a best screenplay nod for Diablo Cody. It garnered an estimate $4.2 million for the weekend from 1,200 screens in 17 territories. Its overseas cume stands at $42.2 million.

Newcomers during the weekend included New Line's "Semi-Pro," which finished No. 1 domestically and opened No. 2 in the U.K. with an estimated $1.6 million from 345 spots. Universal International also opened the thriller "Untraceable" in the U.K., where it finished No. 8 in the market with an estimated $1.2 million from 281 screens.

Universal is releasing Sony's No. 4 domestic title, "The Other Boleyn Girl" — a costume drama starring Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson — in 13 overseas markets. The weekend action in five territories was $1.6 million from 307 screens.

"Sweeney Todd" from DreamWorks/Warner Bros. International tallied an estimated $4.9 million from about 2,300 locations in 54 markets, lifting its overseas cume to $89.3 million. Warners' "Bucket List" registered $4.8 million from 1,900 screens in 26 markets for a cume of $41.8 million.

Disney's "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" pulled an estimated $4.8 million from 2,638 screens in 35 markets for a cume of $221 million; worldwide, the total is $437 million. Disney said the sequel's overseas total has eclipsed that of its predecessor, 2004's "National Treasure," by 28%.

Fox's "27 Dresses" hoisted its international total to $34 million thanks to a $4.5 million weekend at 1,855 screens in 28 markets. Sony's "The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep" garnered $3.6 million from 2,345 sites in 34 markets for a cume of $38.6 million. Pathe Distribution's "Asterix at the Olympics" is in fading mode (off 70% in Italy from the previous weekend) with an estimated $3.1 million from the comedy's home market of France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Austria.

Sony is distributing "Rambo" in the U.K. and Australia, where the Sylvester Stallone actioner drew $1.6 million from 490 screens in the two markets. The cume for Sony territories only is $6.8 million. Disney opened the music documentary "Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" in Mexico's five existing 3-D-equipped theaters for an estimated $72,000, a record gross for a 3-D opening in the territory, Disney said.

Other overseas cume updates: New Line's "The Golden Compass," $256.5 million (minus the opening-weekend tally from Japan, which was not available Sunday); Paramount's "The Spiderwick Chronicles," $4.2 million; Universal's Definitely, Maybe," $9.3 million; Disney's "Enchanted," $183 million; Paramount's "Cloverfield," $77 million; Universal's "American Gangster," $133.6 million; DreamWorks/Paramount's "Kite Runner," $26.1 million; Universal's "Elizabeth: The Golden Age," $54.4 million; Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks," $133.3 million; Universal's "We Own the Night," $5 million; Warners' "I Am Legend," $327 million; and the same distributor's "Fool's Gold," $7.2 million.
