'Juno' Producer Launches Australian Outpost with Project from 'Red Hill' Director (Exclusive)
The branch will be run by Dan Dubiecki’s Australian partner Torus Tammer and hits the ground running with two projects in development, including one involving Patrick Hughes, the director of the acclaimed Aussie thriller 'Red Hill'
The Allegiance Theater, the production banner run by Daniel Dubiecki, is launching an Australian division.
The branch will be run by Dubiecki’s Australian partner Torus Tammer and hits the ground running with two projects in development, including one involving Patrick Hughes, the director of the acclaimed Aussie thriller Red Hill.
Hughes is attached to direct Undercover, one of two best-selling true crime autobiographies by Damian Marrett, whose rights Allegiance controls. Justin Monjo, who was a writer on Farscape and also worked on the Aussie horror movie Bait, is attached to adapt.
Dubiecki and Tammer, who will produce Undercover, are aiming to develop and make features Down Under for global audiences. The hope is to produce projects that keep their Australian characteristics but feature universal themes.
The projects from Allegiance’s Australian branch will be eligible for government funding and rebate deals. Undercover’s development, for example, is being financed by Screen Australia and Film Victoria. Dubiecki, a dual US and Australian citizen, and Tammer plan to finance the movie with government support, combined with traditional presales and equity financing.
“We have the benefit of being able to utilize some of the very smart incentives offered by Australia’s state and federal film bodies,” says Australian native Tammer. “So our focus is on making films with substance that have universal themes and global appeal.”
Says Dubiecki: “With this producer offset, we can continue focusing on quality films and working with quality artists, while taking the pressure off the financing.”
Undercover, described as “candid, hilarious and at times, chilling,” is the autobiography of Marrett, a Victoria cop who became an unlikely undercover cop responsible for some of the biggest drug busts in the country’s history. He joined the police force as a 19-year old adrenaline-loving suburban kid and rapidly rose through the ranks. He also stayed in character for extended periods, which caused him to lose connection with reality.
Dubiecki’s credits include Juno, Up in the Air and Chloe. Allegiance, which he runs with with partners Lara Alameddine and Timothy Crane, has several projects on the go, including Pete and Goat, with Anton Yelchin and Amanda Seyfried and Dance of the Mirlitons, starring Kristen Bell, Bailee Madison, Chloe Moretz and Jackie Earle Haley.
