Kabel Deutschland books first-half profit

Europe's No. 1 cable group sees earnings jump 10%

COLOGNE, Germany -- Kabel Deutschland (KDG), Europe's number one cable group, booked a slim €4 million ($6 million) net profit in six months to Sept. 30 as earnings jumped 10% to €735.5 million ($1.1 billion).

The figures compare to a €20.6 million loss over the same period last year and follow similarly positive quarterly results from German cable competitor Unitymedia. John Malone's Liberty Global last week signed a $5 billion deal to acquire Unitymedia.

KDG lists 11.8 million subscribers in Germany, more than half a million more than at this time last year.
