Kamat chosen to lead Viacom18

NEW DELHI -- Viacom18, the joint venture between Viacom and Mumbai-based Indian broadcasting group Network 18, has tapped Rajesh Kamat as the CEO for its planned Hindi general entertainment channel.

"Rajesh Kamat (currently managing director at Mumbai-based Endemol India) will join as CEO of the as yet unnamed general entertainment channel. He should be beginning his assignment very shortly," Network 18 Group CEO Haresh Chawla said in an interview Thursday.

Kamat joined Endemol India in January 2006, when the group's Indian subsidiary was established. Earlier, he was senior vp and an executive committee member at Star India.

A replacement for him at Endemol has not yet been announced. At Endemol, Kamat was involved in adapting such Endemol properties as "Big Brother" along with homegrown shows such as "The Great Indian Laughter Challenge."

Viacom18's Hindi channel will feature locally produced programming and acquisitions, while existing businesses such as MTV Networks India have already been brought under the joint venture fold including channels MTV India, Nickelodeon and VH1.
