Kardashian Makeup Maven Joyce Bonelli Reviews Kim's New Contour Kit, Talks Summer Beauty Trends
She's also one-half of the duo behind Insta-girl favorite fashion label Unravel.
Like fellow Kardashian glam squad members Mario Dedivanovic, Jen Atkin and Monica Rose (who recently publicly parted ways with the krew), makeup artist Joyce Bonelli has become a household name.
The larger-than-life blond bombshell with the coquettish voice is renowned for helping Kim Kardashian perfect the flawlessly contoured matte look, which was the reality star's beauty signature for the better part of the pair's 10-year relationship. She's since been recruited by everyone from Emily Ratajkowski to Salma Hayek to Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj (that is, in addition to the Kardashian/Jenner brood) to add that special something to their looks.
And, like her fellow glam squad pals, Bonelli has leveraged her expertise and reputation into her own business. Next year, she'll launch a full range of cosmetics — Joyce Bonelli Cosmetique — but that's not all. The mom of three, who just gave birth to twins, will also head out on the seminar circuit, attend BeautyCon and continue to work on her clothing line with husband Ben Taverniti, Unravel, which retails at Farfetch, FWRD and Barneys.
We caught Bonelli in a rare free moment to chat about all of her upcoming projects, as well as her thoughts on the best summer beauty trends and Kim's new contour kits.
What is your favorite summer makeup trend? Are you into the no-makeup look?
I really love the no-makeup look, that’s the summer trend that everyone’s been talking about. I love that just in general. And then I love what we’ve been seeing a lot on the runway, which is a translucent, dewy type skin paired with a glitter eyeliner or with a pop of glitter somewhere, but everything else is really monochromatic or really neutral. Even if it’s just silver glitter.
What about glossy lids?
I love that! Always.
How do you get it to stay without running off your face?
I always just use a lip gloss because it’s sticky but it doesn’t drip. I love the beautiful glowing skin with the pop of gloss on the lid. A good one I like to use for photoshoots especially is the MAC High Gloss. They have it in clear or with a tint of red or pink.
How do you get the dewy look if you have oily skin?
I like more controlled shine myself, so I would use a matte foundation — I use the Giorgio Armani Power Fabric — I use that specifically if someone has more oily skin. It’s actually matte enough that you don’t need powder, and if you’re not using powder you can use all the cream blushes and highlighters without it looking cake-y.
If you’re just using your normal foundation, I would say to only powder your T-zone and let the oil on your skin come through for the cheek bones. You can even just use blotting strips on the T-zone.
Have you ever heard of using a toilet seat cover as a blotting paper if you’re desperate? Asking for a friend.
Yeah that’s so funny, I have a friend that does that. I feel like that’s a night club go-to when you only have enough room in your bag for your phone and your lipstick. I had a friend that used it on your whole face. (Laughs.) Hey, if you’re shiny and you’re having a moment where you need to blot, I would say use it.
What is your relationship with the Kardashians and the rest of their glam squad?
I’ve been with the girls for so long and we’ve been through so much. It’s been over a decade. We’ve known each other since the beginning, before they were famous. After they started their show people started really loving them and then hating them and now they’re loving them again, there’s been so much that’s happened. Now each one of them is a phenomenon in their own way.
We text every other day and we talk about everything. Even if I’m working with a different client we’re always talking and FaceTiming — we talk about kids, we talk about the fun, scandalous stuff. They’re like my sisters.
What’s it like traveling with the family?
It’s like being on tour. You become friends with everyone that you’re on tour with every day. Stephanie [Kim's assistant] would be there, and whoever is doing the hair, there’s definitely been a lot of glam people over the past 10 years, and there’s certain people that stick — maybe like 10 of us — we’re like the crew. It also depends on their own personal life if they can do a job or not.
When we go on the family vacations or something, it’s not like the regular glam where you come and leave. We’re stuck together.
What do you think about Kim and Kylie launching their own lines?
Oh my God. Let’s talk about Kylie. She’s so young and so established and so smart and I’m just so proud of her. I feel like everyone has a lip kit. A lot of people are obsessed and they’re like, “Oh my God, get me one!” I get asked that all the time.
And then of course, Kim is like a beauty queen, and I did her makeup a couple weeks ago and we were doing the glowy, dewy summer vibe that everyone is obsessed with, and it was the first time I got to try her contour kit on her, and it’s really cool.
I feel like she really perfected the size of the kabuki brush and it blends really, really well. It’s for really sheer, translucent makeup. You don’t even need to use a powder with it. After the first time we used it people were like, “Oh my God, I love it!” It just looks really natural. I really love that the skin is in.
Tell me about your clothing line, Unravel. Anything big coming up?
We showed in Paris last week for Spring '18, our men’s and women’s. Monochromatic is something that we do, and this season is more toned down and muted but with a lot of texture. We have lace-up pants and hybrid stuff. For example, a white denim jacket and the torso to the bottom is white leather. Kendall is so obsessed with the one from the last season.
The brand has such a vibe and personality to it. People are collecting all the bombers. We’re also working on our kids line. Now that we have the twins, we made them the tiniest little bombers and they’re so cute and little. We’re also introducing handbags. We’re really expanding, we’re so busy.
I’m also doing a seminar tour starting at the end of September and I’m doing BeautyCon. And my cosmetics line is dropping for Spring '18. It’ll be a full range at Sephora, Selfridges and Barneys. So yeah, I’m pretty busy.
