Karl Lagerfeld Digs Into the Art World
The mega-multitasker will design a booth showing at the fair FIAC in Paris from October 20 to 23.
Karl Lagerfeld has more hyphenates than anyone, it seems – more than Gwyneth Paltrow, even. He designs Chanel, his own eponymous line, Fendi, Chanel couture; he’s a noted photographer and takes all the Chanel campaign photos, he shows his photography in galleries – now, he’s really digging into the art world.
The Gmurzynska Gallery in Zurich, where Lagerfeld has often shown photos and been a guest, will mount a show called “Rebels” at the big contemporary art fair known as FIAC in Paris from October 20 to 23. The show is curated by Isabelle Bscher, a well known curator in New York and Europe – and Karl Lagerfeld will design the gallery’s booth at the art fair. The gallery’s website announced this recently.
Art fair galleries are becoming a new visual component of art – at art fairs like Art Basel Miami Beach (starts December 1) and Art Basel in Switzerland, the booths where the art is hung – and sold – are getting more visually elaborate all the time. Why is Lagerfeld designing the booth? Seems he likes having a toe in the fine art world – and every world. - Merle Ginsberg
