Simple and chic.

Monday’s Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, definitely did not lack metallics — gowns, makeup, ear cuffs, hair accessories and even hair reflected and shone. Although Kate Mara’s Paco Rabanne frock boasted metallic accents, her makeup artist Coleen Olwell went another direction when it came to beauty.

"Because it was a lot of gray and black, I wanted the eye to be soft and smoky, but I used blues and navy to pop the eye," Olwell says. "Blue is on-trend right now and looks really good with brown eyes, and I’ve never used blue on her, so that was new. We kept the focus there and kept the skin radiant."

To create the look, the makeup artist used the Sisley Photo 4 Ombre Eyeshadow Quad in Mystery ($115), which features silver and deep blue shades she swept across the lid and bottom lash line, blending outward with a small flat brush. In addition, she lined Mara’s waterline with Sisley Phyto-Kohl Perfect Eyeliner in Navy ($57), which she also smudged.

The key to pulling off a strong eye look, says Olwell, is well-hydrated skin, so she spends a lot of time prepping it with Sisley skincare. "If the skin is luminous, fresh-looking and has life, then you can do more on the eye or play with a dark lip," she says.
