Katherine Heigl in the 'Know' at Warners

'Everwood' creator Greg Berlanti directing drama

Warner Bros. has picked up "Life As We Know It," setting Katherine Heigl to star and "Everwood" creator Greg Berlanti to direct the drama. Barry Josephson and Gold Circle's Paul Brooks are producing.

The story centers on two single people who suddenly become caregivers to an orphaned girl after the parents, their mutual best friends, are killed in an accident.

The project, written by Ian Deitchman and Kristin Rusk Robinson, was originally set up by Josephson at Revolution in 2001 then moved to Fox 2000. Gold Circle picked it up, began packaging it, eventually catching Warners' eye.

No start date is set, but "Life" is expected to be fast-tracked.

Heigl is exec producing with her mother, manager Nancy Heigl, though not through the duo's Abishag outfit.

Sarah Schechter overseeing for Warners.

Paradigm-repped Heigl, one of the draws of "Grey's Anatomy," has had a solid film career since her breakthrough in "Knocked Up." She is following up her rom-com hit "27 Dresses" with this summer's "The Ugly Truth," also starring Gerard Butler.

Berlanti, a showrunner who co-created "Eli Stone" and executive produces "Brothers & Sisters," wrote "The Green Lantern" for Warners. He is repped by WME.

The writers are repped by Original Artists and Anonymous Content.
