Her makeup guru, Kate Lee, tells us how she also gave the actress a natural glow for Sunday evening's award show.

Chanel celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee created a graphite smokey eye and naturally nude lip, saying, “Makeup wise, I wanted to be careful not to conflict with the color (of the dress) and maybe not do what you would expect.”

Something we could all expect was Knightley’s glowing skin. “It’s definitely true what they say about pregnant ladies,” says Lee, “they have that extra je ne sais quoi.”

To bump the actress’ glow up just a bit, Lee hydrated her face in three steps, starting with a mist of Chanel Hydra Beauty Essence Mist, followed with Chanel Hydra Beauty Micro Sérum and finally, Chanel Hydra Beauty Gel Crème, which the makeup artist massaged into the skin until fully absorbed. “I love this range because it’s incredibly hydrating but leaves very little residue,” says Lee.

Using a damp Beauty Blender sponge, Lee dabbed a small amount of Chanel Vitalumière Aqua Ultra Light Skin Perfecting Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15, which reflects and diffuses light.

To define Knightley’s already razor sharp cheekbones, Lee employed two shades: Chanel Le Blush Crème de Chanel in Cheeky - a blush with subtle violet undertones and Chanel Limited Edition Le Jardin de Chanel Powder Blush on the front of the apples of the cheeks.

The graphite smokey eye was created from Chanel Quadra Eyeshadow in Prélude and Chanel Quadra Eyeshadow in Tissé Mademoiselle.

“I tried to make a mixture between a slate grey and a cool brown, because I didn’t want it to be a cold, draining grey — I wanted it to be a smokey, smoldering grey,” Says Lee who eschewed eyeliner for this look in order not to have too many lines or too much hardness.

Instead of eyeliner, Lee wet the eye shadow and applied it along the base of the eyelashes, then blended shadow along the socket line in an inward direction.

For those naturally nude lips, Lee wanted to ensure they would be glossy, somewhat transparent and actually nude rather than pale. She used a color called Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Sheer Lip Colour in Satisfaction and cleaned up the edges of the lips with concealer instead of lip liner.

“I like to see that natural shape of the lip line,” says Lee. “The thing I think makes her nude different is that this is slightly transparent, so you still see her own lip color come through.”
