Tri-Star has preemptively picked up the rights to The Perfect Mother, the debut novel of writer Aimee Molloy, with Kerry Washington attached to star as well as produce via her Simpson Street production company.

Amy Pascal also will produce with her partner Rachel O’Connor.

With shades of Gone Girl and Big Little Lies, The Perfect Mother tells of a group of moms (and one dad) whose quaint lives are disrupted when a baby of one of the mothers is abducted from his crib. Over the course of 13 days, police bungle the investigation, the media begins to finger the baby-losing mother and each member of the group goes to increasingly desperate lengths to find the baby. Oh, and along the way, damaging secrets are revealed, marriages are tested, and friendships are destroyed.

CAA brokered the rights deal on behalf of Molloy, who is repped by Elisabeth Weed at The Book Group for publishing. The book recently sold in a huge preemptive deal to HarperCollins for seven figures.

Washington is the Emmy-nominated star of ABC’s Scandal as well as the recent HBO movie Confirmation, in which she portrayed Anita Hill. She is repped by CAA, Washington Square Arts and Hansen, Jacobson.
