Kings of Leon wears sales crown in Australia
Pink's 'Funhouse' and AC/DC follow on year-end listBRISBANE, Australia -- Kings of Leon's fourth studio album, "Only By the Night" (Sony), was the best-selling album of the year just ended Down Under, according to the Australian Recording Industry Assn.
"Only By the Night" enjoyed a four-week stay atop the ARIA albums chart in 2008, en route to selling more than 350,000 units (five-times platinum), the trade association notes.
Pink's explosive hit "Funhouse" (Sony) was runner-up on the year-end list, which was compiled using sales data accumulated from each chart between Jan. 7 and Dec. 29. It's the third successive time Pink has completed the year in the bridesmaid position; her previous set "I'm Not Dead" was No. 2 in both 2007 and 2006.
AC/DC's comeback "Black Ice" (Albert Music/Sony) was No. 3 on the list, followed by Coldplay's triple-platinum-certified (210,000 units) "Viva La Vida" (EMI) at No. 4, and Sydney duo the Presets' crossover dance hit "Apocalypso" (Modular/Universal Music Australia) at No. 5.
Other strong homegrown performances on the list included six-time ARIA Award winner Gabriella Cilmi's "Lessons to Be Learned" (Mushroom Records/Warner Music Australia) at No. 13, pop siblings the Veronicas' "Hook Me Up" (Warner Music Australia) at No. 17 and Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu's breakthrough album "Gurrumul" (Skinnyfish Music/MGM), which is at No. 21. Aussie product accounted for 25% of the year-end albums chart.
The biggest-selling single of the year was "Low" (Warner Music), the double platinum-certified (140,000 units) hit from Flo Rida featuring T-Pain. The track headed both the ARIA 2008 Top 100 Singles and Digital Track charts for 2008.
Dutch classical showman Andre Rieu capped a remarkable year, virtually owning the ARIA 2008 Top 50 Music DVD Chart. The violinist held positions one to six on the chart, led by "Live In Australia" (Universal). In the top 10, he has seven titles, and 21 within the top 50. Rieu was recently honored with a 100th Australian platinum accreditation across his CD and DVD titles.
