Korean boxoffice numbers still sliding

Local movies hit particularly hard

SEOUL -- Local movies accounted for just 7.8% of the South Korean boxoffice in May, the lowest level since records were started in 2000, according to a report issued on Monday by the nation's largest movie exhibitor CJ CGV.

May saw 12.8 million admissions nationwide, down 1.5% from last year and the lowest level since 2005.

For January-May, nationwide boxoffice admissions are down 7.4% from 2007, and 19.6% from the record set in 2006.

Domestic films are suffering even worse, falling to 22.8 million admissions this year from 44.8 million in 2006.
