L.A. Film Fest to Screen 'How to Train Your Dragon 2,' '22 Jump Street'

The two sequels will be presented at pre-festival showings before the festival formally begins on June 11.

Even before the Los Angeles Film Festival formally kicks off June 11, the fest will hold two pre-festival screenings: DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be presented in 3D on June 9, and Sony/MGM’s 22 Jump Street will unspool on June 10.

The Dragon sequel, written and directed by Dean DeBlois and featuring the voices of Kit HaringtonJay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson, will be released nationally on June 13. The Jump Street sequel, from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, opens to the public June 13.

Festival organizers also announced additions to the fest’s Master Class series. Production designers K.K. Barrett and Jeannine Oppewall will discuss creating Los Angeles for the screen in a program called “Reimagining L.A.” on June 14. On June 17, a class called “Costume Builds Character” will bring together costume designer Arianne Phillips and director James Mangold. Another Master Class, “Music in Film: A Sound Journey with Atticus Ross,” which will take place on June 12, was previously announced.

Two programs have been scheduled for Music in Film at The Grammy Museum. On June 14, "Intersection: Music & Film" will showcase an afternoon of music featuring actress Jena Malone and Lem Jay Ignacio’s improvisational music project, The Shoe. On June 15, The Frank Morgan Tribute will present a jam session that pays tribute to alto sax legend Frank Morgan, whose career is the focus of documentary The Sound of Redemption. The evening will feature jazz musicians George Cables, piano; Ron Carter, bass; Mark Gross, alto sax; Grace Kelly, alto sax; and Roy McCurdy, drums.

As part of the Festival Conversations series, “Love Letters to Los Angeles: Michael Connelly” will offer a conversation with detective novelist Michael Connelly on June 16.

A first-time event taking place this year is “The Black List Live! A Staged Reading,” a collaboration with The Black List that will consist of a June 14 staged reading of an unproduced Black List script, Stephany Folsom’s 1969: A Space Odyssey, or How Kubrick Learned to Stop Worrying and Land on the Moon, about a White House public affairs assistant who convinces Stanley Kubrick to fake the moon landing.

The festival also will join forces with Funny Or Die for the first time to host a mashup comedy showcase celebrating diverse, unique and authentic voices in the comedy world.

The 2014 festival returns to downtown Los Angeles at L.A. LIVE for a fifth year; it runs from June 11 to June 19.
