Eric Garcetti told the first lady he was unaware of the 16-year-old's visit to L.A. until very recently. Her reply? "Good. You weren't supposed to."

This story first appeared in the Aug. 1 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

Malia Obama's L.A. stint was supposed to be top secret. Since early summer, the first daughter has been interning as a P.A. on CBS' Extant. Crew were sworn to secrecy and the White House intervened at one point to suppress photos of her at Venice's Gjelina. At a Grammy Museum event July 16, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti told THR he spoke with Michelle Obama at another event that day.

When the first lady said that Malia (who turned 16 while working on the show) had a "great experience," the mayor told her that he hadn't even known Malia was in town until very recently. "Good," Michelle said, "you weren't supposed to." If the paparazzi are still looking for the eldest Obama daughter, they'll have to find her in D.C. Garcetti said the teen returned home with her mom after Michelle wrapped up her L.A. visit.
