WeHo's Latest Staycation Destination
The La Peer Hotel brings an exclusive Retna collaboration, design by Gulla Jonsdottir and new Casey Lane restaurant to the Design District.
Angelenos' staycation prospects just got significantly brighter. The January 16 opening of Kimpton's La Peer Hotel in West Hollywood's Design District is like the launch of a new local hang. The 105-room boutique property is a true urban retreat, tucked between Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue, with expansive outdoor public spaces and a secluded pool.
Fitting for its stylized surroundings, principal designer Gulla Jonsdottir placed an emphasis on handcrafted art and custom furniture throughout the space, which manages to walk the fine line between sleek and comfy. Appropriately, the hotel site is where the Iceland-born designer's first L.A. studio was. Inside, it's all earthy hues and natural materials with a healthy dose of innovation and interest — think a leather "cocoon wall," liquid surfaces, bronze columns and six-foot light sconces.
Beyond the lobby lounge, there is curated photography, poetry and paintings from Jonsdottir's friends, with a highlight being an installation in the back courtyard by acclaimed graffiti artist Retna (whose work is visible around WeHo) in collaboration with artist Guerin Swing. Beyond staycationing, there are also many nooks and intimate spaces to hold a meeting or simply hang with friends over a Toasted and Roasted coffee, kombucha or customized picnic basket.
Rooms are graced with free-standing tubs with separate showers featuring geometric-shaped windows looking out to the white oak herringbone floors of the room. Jade yoga mats are provided in-room, as well as the Yoga Wake Up app. The fourth-floor penthouse is outfitted with Jonsdottir's "Heimaland" collection of one-of-a-kind art-like furniture, as well as two-tone striped floors and two-toned walls showcasing paintings and neon art. That suite's large terrace is the place to be, with an outdoor dining area, fire pit and views overlooking the Hollywood Hills.
Another draw is surely renowned chef Casey Lane's Viale dei Romani. (His Venice eatery, The Tasting Kitchen, has been a destination for the likes of Reese Witherspoon and Keke Palmer.) His seafood-driven cuisine here is inspired by his trips to Mediterranean coastlines, incorporating Italian influences along with Southern French and North African. Think raw fish, wood-fired seafood, pizza, pasta and falafel along with top-notch bread and pastries, all crafted in-house.
And being in this neighborhood, the La Peer wouldn't be complete without a retail portion. The ground floor features Atelier Gulla Jonsdottir, a studio gallery where artwork and furniture from the hotel is available for purchase.
