The NLRB will seek an opinion from its general counsel before deciding whether to issue any complaints in connection with 10 unfair labor practice charges filed by the WGA against the Hollywood studios.
National Labor Relations Board general counsel Ron Meisburg now will decide in the next few weeks what to do about the WGA's charges, filed Nov. 1 in connection with the guild's strike rule requiring members to register scripts on open film and TV projects, the federal agency said Wednesday. The WGA has charged that studio companies acted illegally in ordering writers to disregard the strike rule.
There was no immediate word on whether a Dec. 13 filing by the guild would also be forwarded to Washington. That charge involves the studios' bolting contract talks on Dec. 7.
The local NLRB office has accelerated its review of all of the charges. But even local review of the latest filing is likely to stretch at least into mid-January.
Management negotiators have refused to continue contract talks with the WGA unless the guild withdraws certain demands, and the guild claims that amounts to an unfair labor practice.
The forwarding of the guild's Nov. 1 filing for advice from the general counsel had been anticipated (HR 12/19).
