Lake is ABC's catch of day

Set to star in comedy pilot 'Middle'

Ricki Lake has been tapped to star in ABC's single-camera comedy pilot "The Middle."

Additionally, Chris Klein and Al Madrigal have joined CBS' comedy pilot "The Captain," and Michael McKean has come aboard ABC's comedy pilot "The Thick of It."

"Middle," from WBTV, centers on an extended lower-middle-class family in the Midwest. Lake will play the central character and the narrator of the show, a harried but game mom. Also cast in the pilot is Brenna O'Brien as the family's middle child.

Former talk show host Lake recently hosted CBS' "Gameshow Marathon." She is repped by ICM and Hyler Management.

"Captain," from CBS Par TV, centers on a guy (Fran Kranz) who moves into an old Hollywood building. "American Pie" alum Klein will play the guy's best friend, a successful financial planner. Madrigal will play the building's daytime doorman, Jesus.

Earlier this development season, comedian Madrigal (CAA, Generate) had a talent holding deal with Fox Broadcasting Co. and 20th Century Fox TV.

"Thick," from Sony TV and BBC Worldwide Prods., follows workers in the office of a low-level congressman. "Spinal Tap" alum McKean will play a dissipated former campaign manager who is now chief of staff.

In other pilot casting news, Valarie Rae Miller (Kohner Agency, Leverage management) has joined CW's one-hour "The Reaper."
