'L&O' will turn 20; sitcoms come, go

It's official: "Law & Order" will match "Gunsmoke's" record primetime run.

NBC on Monday renewed Dick Wolf's crime drama for a 20th season. The order is believed to be for 16 episodes.

In other pickup news, Lifetime ordered 12 episodes of "Sherri," a sitcom starring "The View" co-host Sherri Shepherd as a woman who takes in her husband, his girlfriend and their illegitimate child.

Terri Minsky has come on board as an exec producer of the series alongside Nina Wass and Gene Stein. Dave Flebotte, who penned the show, will be a consultant. Shepherd will serve as a co-exec producer.

Meanwhile, ABC has canceled the Christina Applegate amnesia comedy "Samantha Who?" The network had offered to renew the show if producer ABC Studios would cut $500,000 per episode from its budget. But in light of its 10 newly picked-up series, ABC ran out of slots and promotional ability. (partialdiff)
