Emmys: 'Last Week Tonight With John Oliver' Wins Best Variety Talk Series

Stephen Colbert is hosting the ceremony, airing live on CBS.

HBO's Last Week Tonight With John Oliver won the Emmy for best variety talk series on Sunday night.

The show beat out TBS's Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live!, CBS's The Late Late Show With James Corden, CBS's The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and HBO's Real Time With Bill Maher.

The late-night host took to the stage and thanked HBO, before jokingly putting the spotlight on Oprah, who was seated in the front row of the audience for the night.

"I met Oprah once, it was like meeting the queen, but much much better," he joked.

Oliver also took home the award for best writing for a variety series earlier in the night.

The Primetime Emmy Awards are being handed out at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Stephen Colbert is hosting the ceremony, airing live on CBS.
